San Diego's practice landscape
San Diego County combines a large military population, two major universities and a strong wellness culture. Median household income was $109,132 in 2024, above California's $100,149 (U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2024 via Census Reporter). Practices range from couples and family therapists in urban neighborhoods to counselors in North County who see many clients by video because of the distances involved.
Frequent relocations, deployments and long commutes on the I-5 and I-15 make flexible scheduling a priority here.
Three San Diego workflows
Couples and family sessions with their own pricing
Couples work is a large share of many San Diego practices. In Prexella, couples, family and individual sessions are separate session types with their own lengths and fees, and clients book the right one directly. Superbills can carry 90847 for couples or family sessions with the client present.
Clients who move
Military families and students often relocate in the middle of treatment. When a client moves out of California, check the new state's rules before continuing by video, and use the session notes to record the transition plan. Prexella keeps the client's history, signed forms and superbills in one record if they return.
North County telehealth days
Clinicians who see clients from Carlsbad to Escondido often set aside telehealth-only days. Each booking is marked telehealth or office, both share one calendar, and telehealth clients receive their join link in the reminder email the day before. Confirm the client's location at the start of each video session.
Prepaid sessions and fewer no-shows
Clients can buy session credits in the portal and book against them, and Prexella sends a reminder before the last session of a package. Combined with card payment at online booking, that keeps payment out of the therapy hour.
Running a San Diego practice day to day
A typical week for a San Diego therapist mixes in-person couples sessions, individual telehealth and a few new intakes. Prexella keeps those in one calendar, with blocked time for supervision or school pickups so clients cannot book over it.
New clients find you, book an intake, pay by card and complete their paperwork in the portal before arriving. Returning clients reschedule themselves within your open hours. Every session generates a reminder the day before, and telehealth reminders carry the join link.
At month end, generate superbills for clients who want reimbursement and review income by date of service in Finances. If you also see some clients through insurance, Prexella's insurance workspace hands those claims to a biller, while your private-pay clients stay on card payments and credits.
Practices near the coast that offer walk-and-talk or outdoor sessions can set those up as their own session type with its own fee and length, so they appear clearly on the booking page.
When clients need more than weekly sessions
Some San Diego clients, particularly those preparing for a deployment or a move, want several sessions in a short period. Booking packages schedule a series of dates in one checkout, and prepaid credits let a client add extra sessions without a new invoice each time. Both work for telehealth and office visits, and every session still produces its own reminder and, if needed, its own line on the month's superbill.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep seeing a client after they are transferred out of California?
Only under the rules of the state they move to. California's BBS lets you serve a client located in another jurisdiction only if that jurisdiction allows it and you meet its requirements, so check the new state's board before continuing by video.
Does Prexella bill TRICARE?
No. Prexella does not submit TRICARE or other government claims. Its insurance workspace prepares claims for a biller, and it is built mainly for private-pay and out-of-network practices.
Can I schedule couples sessions with a different fee?
Yes. Each session type has its own length and fee, so individual, couples and family sessions can be priced separately, and superbills can use 90847 for family or couples sessions with the client present.
