Bergen County's private-practice landscape

Bergen is New Jersey's most populous county and sits directly across the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan. Its practices serve clients who live in Teaneck, Ridgewood or Fort Lee and often work in New York City. Fees are high by national standards: Sidecar Health's cash-price analysis, reported by Becker's, put New Jersey psychotherapy at $300 to $398 per session (Becker's Behavioral Health).

Many Bergen clinicians hold both New Jersey and New York licenses so they can follow clients across the river, and many run a mostly out-of-network practice from a Hackensack, Paramus or Englewood office.

Three Bergen County workflows in Prexella

1. Licensing follows the client: a two-state commuter caseload

A client who is home in Ridgewood three days a week and in a Midtown office two days can book video on home days and the office on the others. Clients choose telehealth or in office each time they book, the calendar shows both kinds, and you confirm the client's location at the start of each video session. Prexella records the visit type; your licenses decide which sessions you can take.

2. Horizon superbills for out-of-network clients

Horizon BlueCross BlueShield of New Jersey is by far the largest carrier in the state's employer markets, so most out-of-network Bergen clients file with the same insurer. Prexella's superbill includes your New Jersey license number, NPI, EIN, the diagnosis you enter and each session's CPT code and place of service, in a layout claims processors can read without calling you.

3. Packages for couples and families

Couples work is a large part of many Bergen practices. Couples buy a block of session credits in the portal, each completed session draws one down, and late cancellations inside 48 hours apply the credit penalty automatically. You stop splitting invoices between partners.

Your brand across the river

Clients on both sides of the Hudson see your practice name and domain on the booking page, the portal and every email. Intake, informed consent and telehealth consent forms are e-signed with an audit trail before the first session.

Getting a Bergen County practice set up

Setup is one call with the Prexella team: your session types and fees, office and video hours, intake and consent forms, and your branding on your own domain. Bergen practices commonly add:

  • A telehealth consent form that asks clients to tell you when they are joining from New York, stored signed on their record.
  • Couples and individual packages at different prices, so couples prepay for couples work.
  • A short consultation slot that new clients can book before an intake, free or paid.
  • Promo codes for the clients you see at a reduced fee, applied at checkout.

Group practices. Many Bergen groups have LCSWs, LPCs and an LMFT under one name. Prexella is one flat fee for the practice, quoted on a demo call, so adding a clinician does not add a seat charge.

Client communication. Clients message you securely in the portal instead of texting your cell, and they complete PHQ-9 and GAD-7 check-ins there between sessions, with scores saved to their record.

Switching. Export your client list and documents from your current system, have Prexella set up, and send new bookings to your new page while existing appointments finish. Most Bergen practices run both for one billing cycle; see how to switch.

Frequently asked questions

I hold New Jersey and New York licenses. Can I keep both caseloads in one account?

Yes. Both caseloads share one calendar and booking page. Your superbill settings hold your license number; if you need a different license number per state on superbills, raise it on your demo call so it can be set up correctly.

A client works in Manhattan two days a week. Can I see them by video on those days?

Only if you are licensed in New York or otherwise authorized there, because the rule follows where the client is during the session. On days they are home in New Jersey, your New Jersey license covers video. Confirm and note the location at the start of each session.

Can couples pay for a package up front?

Yes. Sell session credit packages in the portal; each completed session uses one, and clients are reminded before credits run out.
