Cambridge's practice landscape

Cambridge combines two major universities, a large biotech and research workforce and a high concentration of private-pay therapy practices. Median household income was $143,108 in 2024, far above the Massachusetts median of $104,828 (U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2024 via Census Reporter). Clients here tend to be highly educated, research-minded and comfortable with measurement, and many practices include psychologists who do assessments.

Three Cambridge workflows

Measurement-based care

Research-minded clients often appreciate seeing their own progress. They complete PHQ-9 and GAD-7 screenings in the portal before sessions; scores are calculated and saved to their record, and a positive PHQ-9 self-harm item routes them to the C-SSRS follow-up.

Assessments billed across several dates

ADHD and learning evaluations for graduate students run across several appointments. Prexella's superbills include the psychological testing codes (96130–96139) as separate lines, so a client can submit an entire evaluation with one PDF. Booking packages can schedule a series of weekly dates in one checkout.

Visiting scholars and international clients

Cambridge has many residents on one- or two-year appointments. When they move on, the rules of their new location decide whether video sessions can continue; Massachusetts has not joined PSYPACT or the Counseling Compact. Confirm and note each telehealth client's location at the start of the session.

Booking that matches the clientele

Clients book and pay on your online booking page, choose telehealth or office, and sign forms before the first session, all on your own domain. Every slot is checked on the server so two clients cannot book the same hour.

Setting up a Cambridge practice

Cambridge practices often combine therapy and assessment, so setup starts with session types: intake, ongoing therapy, and each assessment appointment, each with its own length and fee on the booking page.

Billing settings come next. Add each clinician's NPI, license number and taxonomy code and the practice EIN; superbills pull them in automatically. Prexella suggests psychotherapy CPT codes from session length, and testing codes are selected per line for evaluations.

Then screenings and forms. Decide which clients receive the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 and when; results are saved to the client record. New clients sign intake, informed consent, the privacy notice and telehealth consent in the portal after booking, with an ESIGN and UETA audit trail.

Finally, payment. Cambridge clients typically pay by card at booking or buy a package of session credits, and receive a superbill at month end if they plan to seek out-of-network reimbursement. Everything runs on your own domain, so clients see your practice's name throughout.

Graduate students and pricing

Graduate students often have student health plans and limited budgets. Prexella has no sliding-scale feature, but Cambridge practices commonly create a reduced-fee session type or a promo code for students, applied at checkout on the same booking page. Students who have out-of-network benefits through their plan can still receive a superbill at month end, and those who prefer to budget ahead can buy a small package of session credits. Because every session, form and payment sits on one client record, a student who returns after a semester away picks up exactly where they left off, with their earlier screenings still on file for comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bill psychological testing on a superbill?

Yes. Prexella's superbill tool includes psychological testing codes 96130 to 96139 as separate lines with units, alongside psychotherapy codes.

Do clients complete screenings before sessions?

Clients complete PHQ-9 and GAD-7 screenings in the portal, and scores are saved to their record so you can review them before the session.

Can international clients book?

Anyone can book through your booking page, but for telehealth what matters is where the client is located during the session. If they are outside Massachusetts, that jurisdiction's rules apply.
